Who God is

Emmanuel

There has been many times I’ve wished God would give me a sign, preferably a big, neon and flashing one. At times I have strained to hear the voice of God, wanting to know the will of God.  It is only with a surrendered heart God reveals His will.

In the Old Testament the children of Israel were given a reliable way to know God’s will.  They didn’t have to go by what someone thought God was saying or felt like God was saying. They were given the Urim and the Thummim. These were used by the high priest to discern the will of God. They were kept inside the pouch of the breastplate of high priest . Not much is known about how the Urim and the Thummim worked except the high priest would ask God a question, God would answer and the high priest would know what God was saying.  A clue is in the meaning of the names themselves. The meaning of the Urim is revelation or light and Thummim is truth or perfection. However they functioned, the revelation and truth of God was given.

We don’t have to find a high priest to know the God’s will. We have been given Emmanuel, God with us. Sometimes I think we forget we have God dwelling within us. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead is in us.  The same Spirit that healed the sick, opened the blinded eyes, and raised the dead to life, that same Spirit makes Himself known to us today. He is the revelation and truth. If we are wanting to know the will of God for our lives, it is Jesus Christ. He is the Word made flesh and dwelt among us. He is the way, the truth and the light. We want answers, we want action and what has been given is God Himself. If we will delight ourselves in Him, He will give us the desires of our heart. If we will commit our way to Him; trust Him, He will act. We will know His desires for us, we will know Him.
